Turkey Donations Needed for Thanksgiving

We’re just a couple weeks away from Thanksgiving, and a bird shortage has local food shelters hunting for donations.

In the past, the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf has received an outpouring of donations for turkeys and other Thanksgiving foods.

This year they hope to give 2,700 families a meal. But so far they haven’t seen any turkey donations. Food shelf staffers are worried that resources sent to help the victims of Tropical Storm Irene won’t be refilled in time.

“We were hit pretty hard with that storms and a lot of diverted resources in a number of ways have really hurt those that are most marginalized– seniors, people who are living below the poverty level are having a hard time,” said Rob Meehan of the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.

This year the food shelf has seen an increase in families requesting help and a drop in donations.

If you’d like to help, you can bring donations to the Burlington location. And if you need help, you can call the food shelf to request assistance.
