Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf kicks off turkey drive
The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf is aiming for 2,700 turkeys for its annual donation drive this year. Last year that goal was exceeded with 3,212 turkeys.
Donors can drop off turkeys at 228 N. Winooski Ave. in Burlington. A donation of $10 will buy a turkey for a family of four. The food shelf is also accepting donations of canned vegetables and other Thanskgiving foods.
Donations are accepted between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays, and 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Nov. 19.
This year the food shelf and other assistance agencies are helping a population hurt by Tropical Storm Irene.
“Emergency food providers throughout Vermont have been overwhelmed since the storm hit, with an increased number of people in need. And with long-term recovery just beginning, those increases are likely to be sustained for some time to come,” said Rob Meehan, Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf executive director.
