BURLINGTON, Vt. — U.S. letter carriers across the country are participating in the National Stamp Out Hunger Campaign on Saturday.
Weekend postal workers in every town throughout the Champlain Valley are asking people to put nonperishable items by their mailboxes or front steps. They’ll collect them and bring the to local food banks. The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf will receive much of the Burlington area donations.
This year, organizers said, with a bad economy the need is high.
“We letter carriers, we go door to door. We know our customers very well,” U.S. Postal Service food drive coordinator Sandra Sonnthe said. “We see a lot of poverty. We see Vermonters working two jobs to meet the need of their families, and we know they need a little extra help.”
Letter carriers are asking people to put out their donations early. They will be collecting from 9 a.m. Saturday until the early evening.
