Burglars hit Burlington food shelf
Burlington, Vermont – April 27, 2011
An agency that gives away free food to the needy was burglarized Tuesday night.
Someone broke into the two outdoor freezers at the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, stealing meat and prepared meals.
Police say the hinges were pulled off of the locks on the freezer with a crowbar. The food shelf relies on donations and government programs to supply the food that it gives to residents for free and say this is a sign of the times.
“Right now any food that’s taken like that hurts the pocketbooks of the donors and us. Times are tough right now, we’re looking at federal cuts that are going to hurt other agencies that provide services for people living below the poverty level, so anything like this can be devastating to food shelves,” said Rob Meehan, the director of the Emergency Food Shelf.
The food shelf is hoping to replace the stolen food with food drives and donations from the public.
