Radio station holiday party benefits hungry Vermonters
Burlington, Vermont – December 21, 2010
The food shelf in Burlington got a big boost Tuesday morning from a local radio station.
WVMT held its annual Christmas party to benefit the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.
Gov. Jim Douglas and Gov.-elect Peter Shumlin were among the VIPs who stopped by for the party.
Events like this help bring in generous donations, but the food shelf hopes it will remind people to give year-round.
“People thinking that the giving season– which is Thanksgiving and Christmas– that that’s the key time of year. It’s not. Every day’s the key time. It’s 24/7, poverty’s 24/7 and growing,” said Bob Maritano of the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.
Among the donations pledged during the WVMT party Tuesday morning were 1,000 jars of Bove’s spaghetti sauce and 1,000 pounds of pasta from Shaw’s Supermarkets.
