Kenny Garrison was quick to explain radial symmetry as he picked up his newly spun bowl. He made it for his school’s upcoming “Fill the Bowl” supper being held to raise money for the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.
“It’s about the radiating parts from a central point,” the Burlington 8-year-old said.
Students have made about 200 bowls at Burlington Clay Studio and with the help of University of Vermont pottery studio.
Fellow classmates Faduma Haji, 9, and Nya Jones, 9, chimed in with an explanation of the event.
“This event is about being responsible and responding to what we see,” Haji said.
“We are making our bowls so we can sell them for charity,” Jones added.
Integrated Arts Academy Arts Coach Judith Klima said the third grade class has been working on the event for about a months.
“They have been making bowls and organizing the very generous donations from the community,” she said. “This event helps them learn about their community and puts a focus on the needs of a lot of folks in our area who don’t have enough to eat.”
Soup and bread is being donated by City Market, Sugar Snap, Panadero’s, August First Bakery, Great Harvest and The Chubby Muffin.
This is the second year that the school has held this event. Last year, $1,000 was raised for the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger. About 300 people attended.
“The money is going to people who are hungry,” said Zoe Cudney, 8. “And it’s important we know about these things so we can help and not let it happen to us in the future.”
