SOUTH BURLINGTON — Deborah Balserus of Hackett, Valine & MacDonald Insurance Agency received an Agency Hands in the Community grant award from The Allstate Foundation for her commitment to volunteerism.

The grant program recognizes Encompass insurance agents for outstanding community service with a $1,000 donation to a charitable organization. To qualify for the grant, agents must show evidence of volunteer work that has had a positive impact on the local community.

Balserus and several other Hackett Valine & MacDonald employees volunteer for Women Helping Battered Women, a nonprofit organization working to end domestic violence against women and children in Chittenden County.

Langrock takes day to support United Way
MIDDLEBURY — Ten attorneys and staff from the Middlebury office of Langrock Sperry & Wool participated in the United Way of Addison County’s annual Day of Caring.

They volunteered to provide landscaping assistance to the Middlebury Community House, and spent the day cutting brush, pruning trees, weeding, and mulching flowerbeds. This is the second year LSW has participated in UWAC’s Day of Caring.

Not to be outdone by Middlebury,

Each month in 2010, to celebrate its 50th anniversary, Langrock is making donations of 50 to charitable organizations throughout Chittenden and Addison counties.

This month’s target was 50 hours of donated time and United Way helped Langrock exceed that goal.

“It was a rewarding experience for all of us and the folks at the food shelf were very appreciative of our efforts,” said Langrock attorney Eric Knudsen. “The donation of time is something everyone should be able to give and the United Way made it easy for us to find an organization to which we could.”
