Letter carriers work to Stamp Out Hunger

Burlington, Vermont – May 7, 2010

Your postal carrier won’t just be delivering letters and bills Saturday– he or she will also be picking up food.

Saturday is the annual Stamp Out Hunger event. Letter carriers will be collecting canned goods for distribution by area food shelves.

It’s the largest single-day food drive of the year for the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf. Typically, it collects 10,000 to 30,000 pounds of food. That’s critical, especially since donations dropped off during the recession.

“It’s really big for us, especially when our food donations are down, we’re seeing more people coming to the food shelf, more working families coming in for assistance with food, so we’re really encouraging people to put out food for their letter carriers tomorrow,” said Rob Meehan of the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.

The food shelf says the biggest need is for protein, like peanut butter and tuna, but they’ll accept any canned or non-perishable items.
