The Chittenden County Emergency Food Shelf is collecting donations of turkeys for the Thanksgiving dinners of low-income families. So far the food shelf has 497 in the pile.
Fifty more families requested turkeys this year over 2008. The group’s goal is to collect 2,700 birds by Nov. 25. Demand of food shelf services is high. About 1,000 more people are expected to visit the food shelf this month compared with a year ago, said food shelf director Robert Meehan.
Distribution of the turkeys will run Nov. 19-25 Donors can drop off turkeys or at 228 N. Winooski Ave. in Burlington. The food shelf also accepts donations of canned goods and other Thanksgiving fixings. Drop-off times are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays; 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. 19-20 and Nov. 23-25; and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 21.
